In the fall of 2009, I had the exciting opportunity to create a logo and develop a cohesive visual identity for the Acadiana Good Times Rollers, a startup women’s roller derby league based in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Throughout the research and brainstorming phase of this undertaking, I observed that many established derby logos leaned towards pin-up iconography, often portraying a playful and alluring image of women. However, I decided to take a contrasting approach with the Acadiana Good Times Rollers, focusing on highlighting derby as a serious and legitimate sport.
To convey this sense of strength and unity while still honoring the league’s femininity and the region’s French heritage, I crafted a distinctive logo called the Deurby-Lis. This logo combines a raised, wrist-guarded fist with a fleur-de-lis, which serves as a symbolic tribute to the Acadiana area. This emblem not only represents the team’s determination and resilience but also pays homage to the rich cultural roots of Lafayette.
The Deurby-Lis logo was the centerpiece of the Acadiana Good Times Rollers’ visual identity, prominently featured on a wide range of team merchandise, including t-shirts, buttons, stickers, and drinkware. It also graces promotional materials such as flyers, programs, and other print media, serving as a recognizable symbol that conveys the strength, unity, and femininity of the league.
Through the creation of the Deurby-Lis logo and the accompanying branding elements, I was able to capture the essence of the Acadiana Good Times Rollers, helping to position them as a reputable and empowering force in the world of roller derby.
